The original Jonathan's Dream, inspired by the Barzach family of West Hartford and built in 1996 as the first Boundless Playground, created an inclusive, accessible play space for families and children of all abilities. The new Jonathan's Dream will extend this legacy with an engaging playground that keeps children of all ages and abilities active and moving. Help make this "reimagined" dream a reality!

Opportunity to volunteer to make Jonathan's Dream come true again!

We will be able to accommodate ~50 volunteers/day for 3 days of community building (plus 25 volunteers/day for 1 day of community planting). This is much fewer volunteers than were able to participate in the original Jonathan's Dream community build in 1996 when more than 1,000 volunteers participated in a 20+ day community build (this is because this time the playground equipment is manufactured off site and then volunteers put it together like an 'Erector' set).

Thank you for understanding as we work to coordinate what it takes to build/plant Jonathan's Dream this time. If you are interested in volunteering, you will be asked to complete a simple application. To receive this application via email, please send an email to Debbie at deb.rosenfeld6@gmail.com

Here are the potential ways you can help.

  1. Community Build - 9/8, 9/9, or 9/10 (3-day community build - 9 am to 5 pm each day). Limited to ~25 handy people/construction professionals plus 25 people (over 16 years of age).
  2. Community Planting Day - 10/1 - 9 am to 5 pm
  3. Plan and Host Fundraisers - at local restaurants or stores - any time.
  4. Grand Opening Family Fun Activities - 10/22 at 10 am (note new date)
  5. Host/Sponsor a Jonathan's Dream Play Club Day - starting next year.
  6. Bake homemade goodies at home with your children and drop them off at the volunteer registration table - 9/8, 9/9, 9/10 and/or 10/1 between 11 am to 2 pm.

Thank you for your interest in Jonathan's Dream.

GOVERNOR MALLOY, WEST HARTFORD MAYOR CANTOR JOIN IN GROUNDBREAKING OF THE NEW JONATHAN’S DREAM REIMAGINED INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND.

Playground to feature Kevin Ollie's Kevin's Kourt.

West Hartford, Conn. (April 9, 2017) – Beneath a colorful “Build it and they will play” banner Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy and West Hartford Mayor Shari Cantor led a group of State and community leaders in Groundbreaking Ceremony five years in the making for Jonathan’s Dream Reimagined, a revolutionary new inclusive playground.

The Groundbreaking ceremony, which traded in traditional steel work shovels for children’s play shovels, was held on site adjacent to the Mandell Jewish Community Center on the Zachs Campus in West Hartford.  Joining the Governor and the Mayor were Amy Jaffe Barzach, Co-founder of Jonathan's Dream; Ronit Shoham, Volunteer Project Manager; State Senator Beth Bye; Richard Fechtor, President of Mandell Jewish Community Center; Max Brown, a young tech industry professional has spinal muscular atrophy and uses a wheelchair and representing Kevin’s Kourt, former world professional wheelchair basketball player Ryan Martin.

Jonathan’s Dream Reimagined will have revolutionary new experiences that will enable new generations of children and families of all ages and all abilities to discover the joys of playing together.  The new playground will also include Kevin’s Kourt, an inclusive basketball court donated by Coach Kevin Ollie and the Kevin Ollie Charity Classic.

The original Jonathan's Dream was built in 1996 in memory of Amy and Peter Barzach’s son Jonathan Peter Barzach,“a sweet little boy with old soul eyes”, and was one of America's very first inclusive playgrounds.

“’Build it and they will play’ has been our drive since we first started on this endeavor to rebuild Jonathan’s Dream in 2012,” said Amy Barzach. “Special thanks to Coach Kevin Ollie, who was among the first to support Jonathan’s Dream Reimagined, the Mandell, Braunstein and Goldfarb families, the Town of West Hartford and Senator Beth Bye and the State of Connecticut for helping to make this ‘Dream’ a reality."

New plans for 25,000 square foot Jonathan’s Dream Reimagined were also announced. Construction will be completed early Fall 2017.  Jonathan's Dream is being rebuilt with the support of the community, the PAC Group, which is donating construction management services, and Shane's Inspiration, which donated design services. One hundred volunteers are needed to assemble and install the playground equipment, which will be put together like an “Erector set” under the direction of construction professionals.  For each day of the build, to be scheduled this summer, 10-15 team captains are needed to lead small groups of 20 volunteers per group.  To learn more, become a captain, or reserve a volunteer spot, please contact Frank Day at fday@companionsforliving.com.

Additional funds are needed to reach the fundraising finish line. Play areas, playground equipment, and benches are available for sponsorship.  Donations of all sizes are needed and appreciated. Visit http://www.jonathansdreamreimagined.org/ for more information.

Billy Crystal steals show to support West Hartford’s Jonathan’s Dream inclusive playground.

West Hartford, Conn. (March 26, 2017)—Film and comedy icon Billy Crystal stole the
show twice Saturday night (March 25).  Following a sold out show at the Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, Billy Crystal joined his cousin and Jonathan’s Dream co-founder Amy Jaffe Barzach of West Hartford at the “Spend the Night with Billy Crystal” fundraiser for Jonathan’s Dream Reimagined.

On a night about comedy, Billy Crystal’s loudest words were about the drama of rebuilding a community playground where children and families of all abilities could celebrate life together. The original Jonathan's Dream was built in 1996 in memory of Amy and Peter Barzach’s son Jonathan Peter Barzach, a sweet little boy with old soul eyes. It was one of America's very first inclusive playgrounds.
“Tonight this dream is being re-dreamt,” Crystal said.
